It’s a strange time to be alive. Like many, I woke up to the news on Wednesday feeling a sense of dread, and I can only begin to imagine what it feels like to live in the US right now. This election will undoubtedly have significant impacts, for people, wildlife and ecosystems in the States and worldwide.
Next Friday, I’m heading to Utah for a nine-day artist residency at Weber State University in Ogden. I’ll be field recording in the Salt Lake and nearby mountains, and collaborating with local poets to produce a new performance piece inspired by the landscape. While I’m anxious about being there during such a turbulent time, I’m excited to experience the beauty of this place and to spend time with creatives at the university, including the amazing Dr. Sarah Grunnah, Assistant Professor of Theatre at the university, who invited me to apply to the residency.
While it can feel hard to know the place of the arts in all this, I feel that in times of joy or sorrow, it will always be there to be what ever we need it to be, whether that’s helping to: build community, provide escapism, deepen understanding, underscore significant (or insignificant) moments, and so much more.
With that in mind…
Here are a few things I’ve been working on, in case they catch you in the right moment:
My new song “O The Sun” is out now - it’s about the sun after the storm, inspired by the short window of sun we experienced on our hike through the Cairngorm Mountains. Listen here
I’ve been co-producing a new programme for BBC Radio 3 Unwind with Joy Nkoyo and the team at Peanut & Crumb. Each episode is a 5.5 hr relaxing mix of classical music and nature sounds to help you get to sleep. Listen here
